Now that you have all seen the photos, now it's time to hear about the trip. First of all Croatia is beautiful!! If you have ever thought about going I highly recommend it...and take me with you:)
Jessica and I met at the Zagreb airport and it was actually pretty smooth. We were both a little nervous about trying to find each other. After finding out hotel we went out to explore Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Zagreb is not a touristy as some of the other cities in Croatia but it definitely has its charm. It's a very european city with sidewalk cafes and old beautiful buildings. Jessica and I took the day to explore the old part of town in which we had to take the venicular up (otherwise climb about a million stairs). There were a couple of weddings going on at some of the churces and we saw some of the bride and groom taking photos with the skyline and buildings in the background, very nice!
The next day we took the bus about an hour and a half to Plitvice National Park. Plitvice is known for their waterfall. It is amazingly beautiful and an UNESCO site. The water is so clear you can see the fish swimming around. It's a huge park as well and there are buses an ferries to help you more around to all the different lakes and waterfalls. We were feeling pretty adventurious and opted to hike most of the time, we did take the ferry twice. If you like beautiful waterfalls with crystal clear water and hiking around lakes then this is a great place to visit.
Upon returning to Zagreb we walked around the city and enjoyed dinner at a sidewalk cafe which was actually harder than we thought. When we returned to Zagreb after a day of hiking we were starving and wanted to grab dinner. Apparently people in Zagreb don't eat because it took us while to find a sidewalk cafe that had food the other had just coffee, dessert, and alcohol. Normally that suits me just fine but at this particular time I was pretty hungry. After dinner we decided to have some ice cream as a reward for hiking all day:)
On Monday, we spent the day walking around the city and exploring different areas and buildings. It was a nice day and a nice walk around but nothing really significant to report. After that it was off to the airport to catch the plane to Dubrovnik!
Our schedule was tight once we got into Dubrovnik. Our plane arrived around 1 and we had a sunset kayak tour booked at 3 so we had to haul to our hotel and then to the place. We did make it only to find out that it was cancelled! They e-mailed me but I hadn't checked my e-mail that day. It wasn't a big deal though because we simply switched what we were doing Friday (walking the city wall of Dubrovnik) with today so we booked a kayak tour on Friday (this time a day tour no sunset).
Off to the city walls we went. Since we were anticipating a trip on a kayak that is why on all the photos of us on the city walls we are wearing our swimsuits under our clothes...there mystery solved. Walking along the city walls was beautiful! Although climbing the stairs up to the city walls was not especially fun. You have all seen the pictures below so I won't bore you with how beautiful it was to look over not only the old city of Dubrovnik but also the Adriatic Sea.
After finishing the city walls we grabbed a quick bite to eat and walked around the old town some more before meeting up with an evening walking tour we signed up for. We took a war tour to learn more about the war in the 1990s and why it happened. To be honest with you, listening to someone talk first-hand about what it was like living in the city during the war and what his family and neighbors had to do and what they thought was very interesting, but I was still a little confused on why the war started.
After the walking tour we grabbed some ice cream (hey, we walked around the city walls all day) and took a taxi to the place we were staying. We had the place we were staying circled on the map and the taxi driver said he knew where it was and when we dropped us off it looked right (this was our first night in Dubrovnik) but it wasn't we were completely lost and it turned out he dropped us off a good mile down the road! Lucky for us, people in Croatia are so nice and these nice ladies out walking their dog walked us back to our place!
The next day we had a bus trip to a nearby town, Korcula, for some bike riding. We went to the bus stop to wait for our ride. After about 20 minutes pass the time they were suppose to pick us up I walked back to our guest house (we actually didn't' stay in a hotel it was more of a private home that rented rooms) and used the phone to call the company. He gave us some excuse about the bus breaking down and maybe we could do it tomorrow (which we couldn't because we had planned to go to Montenegro tomorrow). I was not happy because that was what we had planned to do all day and now we didn't have anything. Our guest house owner, Milo, called him back to yell at him for ruining our day and not running a good business. I went to get Jessica who was waiting at the bus stop in case the bus came and when I came back Milo was still talking to him. On a side note, Milo was great! He helped us a lot and if anyone is thinking about going to Dubrovnik I highly recommend staying at his place. In the end Milo had managed to get the guy to give us a free island boat tour for the day but we had to meet the car at another hotel soon. So we booked it to the hotel and made it just in time.
